Nigeria, Early to mid 20th Century AD

A large well made dynamic water or wine jar with bulbous body, rounded base, beautifully incised and textured geometric patterns; one panel suggesting anthropomorphic figures; a slender neck with flared rim.
Height: 18 inches. Intact with some high point wear.

The Nupe make pottery in a region that is rich in interrelated ceramic traditions.  Compare with a near identical example from the Art Institute of Chicago, For Hearth and Altar: African Ceramics from the Keith Achepohl Collection, Dec. 3, 2005–Feb. 20, 2006, cat. 75.
