Circa 5th to 6th Century AD

High relief carved with a nude youth leaning behind a foliate branch, possibly representing Adam peering over a tree branch to Eve, who would have been on the adjoining tile. Here the style is a bit primitive and the figure is deeply undercut along with the curling plant stalks and leaves, to convey depth. Decorative architectural frieze were popular with civic works and big civic buildings of the time.

Size: 11-1/2 inches H x 13 inches W; overall with stand: 12 inches H.

Provenance: Ex Private Collection from 936 5th Avenue NY. Acquired prior to 1970; Appearing on a 1978-79 Chubb insurance schedule.

Compare with a similar example of a relief depicting a nude male figure, YAG1956.8.37 in the Yale University Art Gallery. The sculptors of these civic works as well as tombs artists in Late Antique Egypt included vignettes recognizable to the people because they were familiar with the iconography of foibles of the pagan past; from the heroes of the ancient Near east and the characters of the Old Testament.
