Athens, Circa 6th Century BC

A rare and delicate two part saucer shaped lidded vessel on thin foot with flared side walls and large circular opening at flattened top; fitted lid with finial handle. Nice tight fit. Brown painted banding and incised circles to surface.

Size: 4-3/8 inches H. x 6-5/8 inches W.

Provenance: Ex American Collection of T.G., Williston FL, no 462 acq. Feb 2002 from Huntingdon Camba UK Gallery as formerly in the collection of Professor D.F. Slothouwer. In 1909 Dr. Slothouwer was awarded the Prix de Rome and with he price money he started an antiquities collection which he continued to expand until 1939. Professor Slothouwer went on to design the Dutch Pavillion for the NY Fair in 1938. (From Phillips Auction House, New Bond Street Sale no 31118 lot 86 (tag under lid) Rare form!
