North Coast Peru, Circa 600 to 900 AD

Silver bowl having slightly tapered walls and an out folded rim lip. Relief decorated in the bottom with a large, striding sea bird, having long legs and beak, large round eye. Size: 4-1/8 inches Diam. + custom mount. Intact. A very nice example.

Provenance: Ex. private West Virginia collection, acquired late 1960’s to early 1970’s. To present owner by descent.


Many Andean peoples left funerary offerings for important individuals. Depending on the status and wealth of the deceased, the vessels could be of wood, ceramic, or cloth; those of the most powerful were of gold and silver.
