Marajo Island, Para, Brazil, Ca. 700 - 1200 A.D.

Bulbous flat bottom urn with a tapered collar with a flared rim. Modeled with opposing janiform faces on the collar, each with their eyes bordered by a built up eye orbit, extended nose with ornament and a uni-brow above. The lower portion of the vessel is painted with a semiabstract design of the figures arms, legs and breasts, also repeated on reverse, and geometric filler between. Overall scattered mineral deposits on the surface. Sections of the rim are restored with the rest of the rim repaired, restoration over the break lines.

Size: 14-3/4 inches H. x 12-1/4 inches Diam.

Condition: The body is intact. These urns were usually buried up to the rims, so there are very few that survive with the rims intact, overall excellent condition.  Museum level. 


Provenance: Ex Jean-Eugene Lions collection, Geneva, Switzerland, acquired 1960’s.
